Exploring the Oparara Valley

To quote Brian from the Rongo Backpackers "if this were easy to get to, it'd be overrun with people". I could not agree more.

The Oparara Basin is tucked away in a remote corner of the rainforests of the northern West Coast and is a natural spectacle of the highest order. Buried deep in this secluded valley are wonders such as stunning limestone arches and strange caves within a thick forest of massive moss-laden trees in every imaginable hue of green. This landscape could be straight out of a Dr. Seuss story complete with a colourful character: the whio - a super-cute, rare blue duck.

Full of child like wonder and delight, Michael (my German-Russian roomy) and I jump into Eric to drive along the winding, rough, gravel and sometimes steep track out of the valley to Karamea.
