Beef Capital of Oz

Time to rack up some kilometres, so I blast southwards to Rockhampton, where the hats, boots and utes are big and the animals can kick my ass!

Once I arrive in Rocky, my first stop is Koorana Crocodile Farm. Curious and slightly concerned about commercial crocodile farming, I am keen to learn more… The informational tour starts with a walk around croc-infested lagoons, with the focus being on how to identify the different types of crocodile and how to avoid being attacked. We then head to the enclosures to feed these prehistoric beasts - well, more lob uncooked turkey in their general direction. Finally, we get to hold a young crocodile named Harvey. I must admit to being very confused by this. The ethics of making and killing animals for food and luxury leather goods is controversial. I still do not fully understand and accept elements of this industry, but I will not go into that here and now.

Established in 1862, Rockhampton’s iconic Great Western Hotel - part country pub, part venue - has a rich history. My visit coincides with the a bull riding event. I spend the evening watching brave cattle folk being tossed in the air by bucking bulls and broncos. It is another controversial event that I am not entirely comfortable with, but try to understand…

Distance: 425.6km
